Flu Season - (And Other Illnesses)

Now that we're officially into "flu" season, I found some interesting excerpts from Ruby's journal in 1964:

January 20: Henry is having headaches quite a bit as well as other pains. He can hardly sit through two (church) services and sometimes doesn't feel like going at all, especially at night. (This was before Sunday night football!)

January 21: A lady from the church and I went visiting this afternoon. We found Sister McGinnis at home with the "flu".

January 23: Henry and I went to Dr. Paschall's office for check-ups this morning. After checking my blood pressure, heart and lungs, the doctor said I was doing all right. He said the headaches Henry has been having are vascular headaches caused from hardening of the arteries. He gave him a new medicine to try for a week and wants him to come back for a check-up then. This evening I developed a "flu". Think I took it from Sr. McGinnis when we were there Tuesday.

January 24: A norther and a little dampness blew in today and my "flu" seemed to take a turn for the worse. I had a slight chill and more aches and pains.

January 25: I stayed in bed practically all day today.

January 26: Brenda has the "flu". I missed Sunday School and church today for the first time in a long time.

January 27: My "flu" seems to be about gone except for a lingering sore throat on the right side and neuralgia pains in my right ear.

January 29: Brenda is still sick and having to miss school. Martha has had a touch of "flu" so she stayed home with the children.

January 30: Billy Joe stuck a thorn in the back of his hand while hunting Monday (January 27) and his hand is swollen and pains him quite a bit. Henry wants him to put some of the liniment on it that he got through Mr. Denman. It took the soreness and swelling out.

In 1964 I don't think we had any flu vaccine yet, so I guess it's a wonder they all got through it so well and quickly! And I hope none of us gets it this year!!!

Congratulations to all of you who are gathering more and more children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews! I hope you're seeing all the pictures of our wonderful great-grandson (Hunter) that Libby keeps posting on FaceBook. :-)

So long for now. Back again soon (hopefully).

An August Potpourri

Last Saturday, Aug. 22, Jo Ann and I were in Tyler, TX and visited the Texas Rose Festival grounds and museum. We were surprised at how extensive both the grounds and the museum are! There is quite a bit of information available at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Rose_Festival.

I took a number of pictures there, which you can view at:
http://johnestroman.smugmug.com/Travel/Tyler-Rose-Gardens/9438431_hz2mR#632835566_EEMnY.

We found other interesting things to see and do in Tyler, which you can scope out at:
http://www.visittyler.com/. There's enough to do that we would actually consider trying to get a timeshare nearby and spending a week in that area!

As I was going through some more of the old memoribilia I came across a high school graduation announcement for David, stating his graduation year as 1942. This confused me because I have always thought he graduated in 1941! If anyone knows for sure, please let me know!!

I found an old Valentine's Day card from Henry to Ruby, but it's undated. But it does reaffirm that love expressed at any age is quite acceptable! Maybe even desirable!!!

Also found a little book titled "Born to Reproduce" by Dawson Trotman. I didn't even know Henry and Ruby had such a book - they never showed it to me! :-)

There were a couple of old letters from Womack, one from 1953 and one from 1957. The 1953 letter was interesting from the standpoint that he was talking about Rose Ellen maybe having a tumor, but I think that "tumor" turned out to be named Elizabeth. Or did I get her birth year wrong? The 1957 letter was dated in November and described some of the adjustments and purchases required to move into Newport, RI at that time of year.

Ledger entries from January 1967 reveal Henry receiving a grand Social Security monthly income of $65.50 and Ruby receiving SS of $119.00 and Teacher Retirement of $172.14! The list of regular and medical expenses is extensive, but somehow they made it - perhaps even beyond "somehow" and all the way to "triumphantly"!

Carolyn's and Womack's Adventures

In view of Carolyn's recent adventure, I found this entry in Mother's journal that I thought you might find of interest:

"Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1964: David called tonight to tell us that Carolyn had a very serious appendectomy this afternoon. Three doctors worked with her for two hours and her appendix burst while they were operating. They thought she was doing all right when he called. Velma was staying the night with her in the hospital.

"Thursday, Feb. 20: Had a letter from Velma. Carolyn is still in the hospital and may be for another week or ten days, but seems to be doing as well as can be expected. Velma got her school assignments for her so she can study some there."

Since I talked with Carolyn on the phone the other day, I guess it worked out okay! And, by the way, I'm glad she's doing okay from her recent adventure!!! And if you don't know about her recent adventure, you need to ask her.

Here are some excerpts from a letter that Air Cadet Henry Womack Stroman wrote home on Nov. 12, 1942 while in training at NAS Corpus Christi:

"I haven't heard from Sis in some time now. I guess they are busy as usual. ...Daddy, I'm glad you liked your birthday present. I wish I could have gotten it there on your birthday (which was Nov. 4). How are the beans doing? Do you think you'll make much on them? I hope I can come home again before too long. We haven't been flying much this week because of the weather. But I flew two hours this morning. It was a little cool at about five thousand feet but it was nice and smooth. If I keep on flying every day, I should be through with instrument squadron in about a week. Then I'll go into advanced squadron and, maybe I can get a half day off on Saturday and come home. ...This is all the paper I have until I buy some more ...so I'll close for now. Billy, I'll answer your letter as soon as I get some more paper."

Well, that's about all the adventure I can stand for today, so I'll close too. See you next edition!

Ruby's Journal for June 16, 1965 and forward: The Abla's visit, etc.

"Martha Jan and Eddie and Marsha came about 9:30 PM. They stayed until Sunday, June 20, 4:30 PM. We enjoyed their visit so much. They and Bill and Martha went to Matamoros, Mex., Thursday PM. Friday evening we all went to Padre Island and took supper. The Bethany Quartet was here Wed. evening and sang and Bill Sullivan preached. Thursday morning Bill Stroman and Eddie (Abla) and Robert Joines went with some of them to Padre Island for a swim.

"Our new pastors came in that morning, Thursday, June 17, and Martha had them, Rev. and Mrs. Russell Harris and daughters, Dolores and Cheryl (?), at her house for dinner, so Martha Jan went over to help her.

"We were happy to have Eddie and Martha Jan sing for us Sunday morning and Bro. Harris brought his first message - a Father's Day message - to the church.

"Jan and Eddie and Marsha left about 4:30 to go to Midland to visit with friends a day or two, then go to Colorado to spend a week with his folks. Boyd and Janice called and talked with us one night while they were here - Thursday night, I believe."

So there you have it for today. I'll try to get another posting out before another 90 days goes by! :-)

Welcome to the 1st Posting!

While this blog is still under construction, I wanted to go ahead and get it launched so you could start subscribing to it and initiate your own breathless anticipation for each breathless post or comment! :-) So don't be surprised if some changes appear as we go along, but I believe the basic idea is enough in place to go ahead and start.

One of the things I will be adding soon is a link to a genealogy file that our son-in-law, Kevin Bowser, is creating on Ancestry.com. I think you will find that interesting when it becomes available.

I hope you will find the time to not only read the posts and comments, but to make your own contributions with your comments for the rest of us to enjoy!

And now for today's entry!

I just noticed that in 1964 the calendar dates fell on the same days of the week as they do this year! So, 45 years later we can look back on March 12, for example, and be reminded not only what happened on that date, but that it was the same day of the week!

On this day in 1964 Ruby wrote:

"Went to Harlingen this morning for Dr. Hamilton to check Henry's face, but this is the Dr.'s day out of the office, so we have to go back tomorrow. We drove to the Rambler place and had a new tail pipe put on the car and the lever to the signal lights fixed. We then drove to Olmito and ate dinner with Jewel. Alma and Josie and Bettie were there and Jim and Nellie and Jimmy Glenn, too. We had a good dinner and a pleasant afternoon. Nellie drove us around a little while."

Well, I suppose that entry is a little ordinary and pedestrian all by itself, but becomes a piece of the overall mosaic which I believe we will all weave together as we share memories and viewpoints. I may sometimes post several days entries together to keep a connected story together if it seems to make sense to do so.

Who, besides me, remembers that old Rambler? Maybe some of you younger ones even drove it! I probably even drove it myself a time or two.
